Township of Severn is seeking candidates for the position of Ward 3 Councillor. The successful candidate will become a member of Township Council, representing the residents of Ward 3. Eligibility

Under the Municipal Elections Act, candidates must be eligible to vote in Severn. Candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • a Canadian citizen
  • a resident of Severn, or an owner or tenant of land in the Township, or the spouse of an owner or tenant
  • not legally prohibited from voting
  • not disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office
  • entitled to be an elector within Severn
What are the responsibilities of this role? 

The role of Council is laid out in Section 224 of the Municipal Act, 2001:

a) to represent the public and to consider the well-being and interests of the municipality;

b) to develop and evaluate the policies and programs of the municipality;

c) to determine which services the municipality provides;

d) to ensure that administrative policies, practices and procedures and controllership policies, practices procedures are in place to implement the decisions of council;

(d.1) to ensure the accountability and transparency of the operations of the municipality, including the activities of the senior management of the municipality;

e) to maintain the financial integrity of the municipality; and

f) to carry out the duties of council under this or any other Act.

What is the compensation for this position? 
 The 2022 annual salary for this position is $24,654.63 including a benefit package.
What is the Term of Office? 

The current four-year term of Severn Municipal Council ends on November 14, 2022. If you are appointed, you could serve as Ward 3 Councillor from June 29, 2022 through to November 14, 2022.

What is the time commitment?

A Councillor can expect to devote time for a minimum of three meetings per month along with various duties on outside committees as appointed by Council.  Meetings are held generally during the day with some evening meetings. Time commitments would include:

  • Council meetings (first Wednesday of every month)
  • Planning and Development Committee meetings (third Wednesday of every month)
  • Corporate Services Committee meetings (fourth Wednesday of every month)
  • attendance at meetings of other committees to which the representative is appointed
  • community events (e.g., ceremonies, parades, etc.)
  • telephone calls, emails and contact with constituents
  • reading and research time
Do you have to live in the ward?

You do not have to live in the same ward to be eligible for the Ward 3 Councillor position.

No. There is no fee to file an application for the vacant Ward 3 Council position.

Applications may be filed via email to agray@severn.ca or in person at our Administration Office (1024 Hurlwood Lane, Severn) between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. starting May 5, 2022 and until June 9, 2022 at 4:00 p.m.
