Recycling collection changes start January 1, 2026

Starting January 1, 2026, residential recycling collection in Simcoe County will be managed by Circular Materials, a not-for-profit organization appointed by producers under Ontario’s new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework.

This province-wide transition shifts responsibility for the collection and processing of blue box materials from municipalities to producers of recyclable products.

The County of Simcoe will continue to manage garbage and organics collection, as well as operate waste-drop off facilities.

Same collection day, different trucks and collection times

Your recycling collection will stay on the same schedule and you will continue using the same carts. The only change is that recycling will now be picked up by new trucks operated by Emterra Environmental Inc. on behalf of Circular Materials. Garbage and organics will still be collected by Miller Waste on behalf of the County.

Recycling and organics will continue to be collected on the same day, but because they are handled by different contractors with separate routes, they may be picked up at different times.

To make sure everything is collected, please place your recycling, garbage, and organics at the curb by 7:00 a.m. (or 6:00 a.m. in some downtown areas) on your scheduled collection day.

Collection schedules remain the same:

  • garbage and recycling alternate weekly
  • organics are collected every week

Tips for winter cart collection

When setting out your carts in winter:

  • shovel a flat spot at the end of your driveway or curb
  • place your carts with two feet of space all around
  • place carts within eight feet of the road
  • don’t place carts behind or on top of snowbanks

You can put out two garbage bags each garbage collection week. If you'd like to put out an additional garbage bag, you need to attach a bag tag to any additional garbage bags. You can use up to six garbage bag tags at a time for a total of eight garbage bags.

It costs $15 for five bag tags and you can purchase tags at the following locations:

You can use any of the County of Simcoe Landfill Sites and Transfer stations for large items.
