Township of Severn’s annual Septic Inspection Program begins in April 2026

Protecting your home, your health, and your local water

Township of Severn’s annual Septic Inspection Program will begin in April 2026, with on-site inspections starting in May 2026.

The program supports the proper maintenance and function of private septic systems, helping protect homes, household health, and local water sources. Regular inspections can identify small issues early, helping homeowners avoid larger and more expensive problems over time.

Properties in the mandatory and discretionary inspection program areas are inspected once every five years. In 2026, inspections are scheduled for properties in the MacLean Lake, Little Lake, and Gloucester Pool areas.

Homeowners whose properties are included in this year’s inspection cycle will receive a letter in April with program details and information about what to expect. Residents do not need to be home during the inspection. As part of this authorized inspection program and as permitted through the Building Code Act, staff may enter properties and will always provide advance notice to owners. Due to the number of properties included in the program and the limited inspection season, individual appointment times cannot be scheduled.

Inspections are conducted in a respectful, non-intrusive manner, and information collected through the program is treated confidentially. The program is designed to support homeowners through early problem detection and clear information about next steps.

“Regular septic inspections are an important part of protecting both individual properties and the broader community,” said Mayor Mike Burkett. “While we understand residents are mindful of costs, this cost recovery approach helps ensure the program is paid for by the properties that receive the service, while also helping homeowners identify issues early and protect Severn’s groundwater, lakes, and local environment.”

If deficiencies are identified during an inspection, property owners will receive a report outlining what work is required and the timeline for completion.

The septic inspection program fee is $370. This is a cost recovery fee, which means it is intended to cover the Township’s cost of delivering the program, rather than having those costs paid through general property taxes. In other words, the fee helps ensure the program is funded by the properties that receive the service — those in the inspection areas with private sewage systems — rather than by the broader tax base.
