Residential fence regulations

This page provides a simplified overview of residential fencing rules in Severn. These regulations help ensure safety, visibility, and consistency across neighbourhoods.

If you're putting in a pool, you'll need to apply for a pool fence permit.

General fence requirements

Fences must be:

  • stable, vertical, and properly supported
  • kept in good repair, free of hazards, defacement, or markings
  • finished if the side of the fence faces the street

Fences must not block:

  • stormwater drainage or natural watercourses
  • public rights-of-way
  • access to utilities
  • Environmental Protection Zones

Height exceptions

Certain features may exceed standard height limits:

  • Gates: Up to 0.30 metres (1 foot) higher than the permitted fence height

  • Archways:

    • Up to 0.61 metres (2 feet) higher in side and rear yards

    • Up to 0.91 metres (3 feet) higher in front yards

  • Decorative caps: Up to 0.15 metres (6 inches) higher

  • Adjacent to non-residential properties: Side or rear yard fences may be up to 3.05 metres (10 feet)

  • Sport courts: Fences may be up to 3.05 metres (10 feet)
