Smart Water Meter Upgrades

Water meter upgrades are coming in Fall 2026

Severn is upgrading its residential water meter system beginning in September 2026. Existing water meters are not being replaced. Instead, a new device will be added to the existing meter remote to allow for wireless meter reading.

This program is intended to modernize how your water use is tracked, support earlier leak detection, and give staff access to meter information more often so residents can benefit from more timely service.

What residents should know

  • Program start: The program is planned to begin in September 2026. More information about the first installation area and start date will be shared once confirmed with the contractor.
  • Timeline: The Township will complete the water meter upgrades over a three-year period.
  • Your existing meter will remain in place: The work involves adding new technology to the existing meter remote to enable wireless meter reading.

Why the Township is upgrading water meters

The upgrade will build on the Township’s existing water meter system by introducing SmartPoint modules and CommandLink tools. Together, these tools can allow staff to collect readings more frequently and respond sooner when unusual water use or possible leaks are identified.

Better information for residents and staff

More frequent reads can improve customer service by giving staff faster access to water-use information when questions or concerns arise.

Earlier awareness of leaks

Instead of waiting for quarterly reads, more regular data can help identify continuous flow or unusual consumption earlier.

How the upgrade supports better municipal service

The program is designed to improve service delivery, strengthen monitoring, and support more efficient field operations.

Improved customer service

Faster access to water meter data helps staff provide residents with more timely and informed responses.

Field-ready technology

The new tools can support activation, auditing, reading, and servicing through mobile platforms, allowing our team to efficiently provide service without accessing your property.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Most homes in Severn currently have water meters that include electronic components allowing them to be read remotely using a signal transmitted to Township-owned reading equipment.

As part of this program, the existing water meter will remain in place. New technology will be added to the meter remote to improve how water meter information is collected.

Water meters are owned and maintained by the Township. Properties connected to the municipal water system will be required to participate in the upgrade program so the Township can maintain an effective and reliable water meter reading system.

The wireless technology used as part of the upgraded system complies with Health Canada’s Safety Code 6, which sets limits for human exposure to radiofrequency energy.

No. There is no separate charge to residents for the installation of the new meter-reading technology.

The upgrade does not replace your existing water meter. It changes how meter information is collected by allowing the Township to receive readings more frequently. More frequent information can also help staff respond sooner to questions about water use or identify unusual consumption.
