Do I need political or municipal experience?
No. You do not need previous political or municipal experience to run. Skills gained through work, volunteering, caregiving, running a business or participating in community groups can all be valuable. Council members should be willing to listen, learn, ask questions and consider different perspectives.
What does a member of Council do—and what is outside Council’s role?
Council members work together to:
- represent residents
- set policies and community priorities
- make decisions about municipal services and finances
- support an open and accountable local government
Township staff provide professional advice and manage day-to-day services and operations. Individual Council members do not direct staff or make decisions on Council’s behalf.
The Mayor has additional responsibilities, including chairing Council meetings, representing the Township at official events, serving on County of Simcoe Council and carrying out Strong Mayor duties.
What is the typical weekly and seasonal time commitment?
The time commitment varies, and some weeks or seasons are busier than others.
Council generally meets at least twice each month, usually on the first and third Wednesdays. Meetings are often held during the day, although some evening meetings may be required.
Members also spend time:
- reviewing agendas and background information
- responding to residents
- attending community events
- serving on committees and boards
- participating in conferences and training
Can I serve while working another job or managing family responsibilities?
Yes, many people balance public service with work and family commitments. However, flexibility is important because some Council and committee meetings take place during regular business hours. Before running, consider whether you can make time for meetings, preparation, resident inquiries and community events.
What are members of Council paid, and what benefits or eligible expenses are provided?
The 2026 annual salaries are:
- Mayor: $50,169.16
- Deputy Mayor: $34,317.95
- Ward Councillor: $29,020.04
Members also receive a $25 monthly internet allowance, an annual mileage allowance and eligible per diem payments for conferences, seminars and meetings of appointed boards and committees.
The Mayor receives additional compensation and an expense allowance from the County of Simcoe. Contact the Elections Team for information about any other benefits or eligible expenses.
What training, orientation and staff support are available after the election?
Newly elected Council members receive orientation and training on Council procedures, Township policies and by-laws. Ongoing training and professional development opportunities are also available throughout the four-year term to help members build their knowledge and skills.
Members are also provided with a Township computer, electronic meeting materials, and a Township email account.
What are the rules, costs and reporting responsibilities involved in campaigning?
The nomination filing fee is:
- $200 for Mayor
- $100 for Deputy Mayor or Ward Councillor
Candidates can begin campaigning, accepting contributions and paying campaign expenses after filing their nomination papers.
Candidates must:
- keep complete financial records
- stay within their campaign spending limit
- follow campaign sign and voting-place rules
- avoid using township logos, resources or materials
- file a financial statement with the Clerk by March 30, 2027
A refundable $200 deposit is required before campaign signs are installed. Candidates are responsible for following the Municipal Elections Act, 1996.
How do I file, and what happens after my nomination is accepted?
Council nomination papers must be filed at the Township Administration Office at 1024 Hurlwood Lane. They can be submitted in person by the candidate or an agent. Online filing is not available, and appointments are strongly recommended.
You will need:
- acceptable identification
- Nomination Paper—Form 1
- twenty-five endorsement signatures from eligible Severn voters—Form 2
- the applicable filing fee
Nominations close on Friday, August 21, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.
After you file, the Clerk will review your nomination and either certify or reject it. The certified list of candidates will be posted by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, August 24, 2026.
Where can prospective school board trustee candidates find role-specific information?
Prospective trustee candidates should review the Ontario Candidates’ Guide and contact the school board they are interested in representing for information about the role. Trustee candidates must live within the school board’s area and be a supporter of that board. Severn’s Elections Team can also help with nomination dates, procedures and filing requirements.
