Automated Speed Enforcement Program to begin in September
With a focus on public safety, the Township of Severn is moving closer to the start of the Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) program.
Enforcement will begin in September after the completion of the mandatory 90-day public awareness period. This ensures that residents and motorists are informed well in advance of the start of the program.
The ASE system, using speed enforcement cameras in community safety zones, is designed to encourage safer driving habits and protect pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users. The ASE program aligns with provincial legislation and supports municipal efforts to reduce speed-related collisions and improve overall road safety.
"Coming Soon" signs were installed in June within sections of the following roads located in our designated Community Safety Zones:
- Division Road West (Marchmont Public School)
- Gray Street (Coldwater Public School)
- Cumberland Road (Severn Shores Public School)
- Coldwater Road
- Muskoka Street north
- River Street
- Burnside Line
Background
In 2024, Council approved the ASE program as part of Severn's broader commitment to traffic safety. Following this decision, staff determined the most effective locations for ASE deployment, focusing on school and community safety zones. These zones are identified within the Community Safety Zone By-law (By-law 2025-27).
Since approval of the ASE program, Severn has:
- coordinated with provincial ministries, utility, and service providers to ensure compliance
- identified and designated six Community Safety Zones as priority camera locations based on speed and safety data
- installed the required 90-day advance notification signage to inform the public before the start of enforcement
- installed additional non-mandatory signage to increase public awareness about the program
- released regular communication updates about the upcoming start of the ASE program
