Severn Fire and Emergency Services welcomes new Rescue truck to the firefighting fleet
Severn's Fire and Emergency Services department has unveiled the newly arrived Rescue truck to Council and the community.
The new Rescue truck replaces the previous Rescue vehicle that was due for replacement. This vehicle has been dispatched to an average of 114 calls per year over the last five years and is a vital asset that supports the Severn Fire and Emergency Services team in fulfilling their role. This new Rescue truck can seat five firefighters versus the previous vehicle that accommodated only two firefighters. This enhanced seating capacity allows for a more efficient on-scene response by the department.
Severn Fire Chief Ritch Lowell conveyed to Council during the demonstration that the Rescue truck “represents a significant investment in the safety and well-being of our community.” The new Rescue truck is outfitted with equipment and capabilities that will allow firefighters to deal with many different types of emergency calls.
Such emergency scenarios include:
- carbon monoxide incidents
- medical emergencies
- structural, vehicle, and wildland fires
- vehicle collisions
The new truck is equipped with a variety of technical rescue tools, including:
- auto extrication tools
- rescue basket and portable lighting for remote patient extractions
- Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and detectors for odour investigations
- variety of water rescue equipment
The Rescue truck has been added to the Severn firefighting fleet that includes four pumper trucks, three tanker trucks, three light-duty trucks, two medium-duty rescue trucks, and a Utility Terrain Vehicle.
In 2025, the department has received further enhancements, including the acquisition of bunker gear and gear racks, as well as diesel exhaust extractors and bunker gear extractors, funded through the Ontario Fire Marshal Fire Protection Grant aimed at cancer prevention. Additionally, the department has procured municipal and forestry fire hoses and nozzles, electric vehicle (EV) plugs (essential for neutralizing EVs and ensuring the safety of both patients and firefighters), along with an update to the Fire Master Plan that will outline Severn's dedication to delivering comprehensive fire and emergency services over the next 10 years.
