Township of Severn to activate second Automated Speed Enforcement camera on Coldwater Road

Township of Severn's second Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) Program camera will go live this Tuesday, September 23, 2025 in the Coldwater Road Community Safety Zone.

Travellers on Coldwater Road will now see that the "Coming Soon" signage has been replaced with "Municipal Speed Camera in Use" signage. This means that those exceeding posted speed limits may be ticketed.

The Division Road West (Marchmont Public School) camera was the first activated camera on September 16, and the second active camera will be the Coldwater Road Community Safety Zone location that will be activated on September 23.

Additional cameras coming to the following Community Safety Zones in the near future include:

  • Cumberland Road (Severn Shores Public School)
  • Gray Street (Coldwater Public School)
  • Muskoka Street North
  • River Street
  • Burnside Line

When a vehicle is recorded exceeding the posted speed limit in a community safety zone, a Penalty Order is issued to the registered owner of the vehicle by mail. These offences do not result in demerit points and are not included on the driver's records.

Township of Severn only issues Penalty Orders via mail. If you receive a text or email regarding payment, it is a scam and should be deleted immediately.

If you receive a Penalty Order, you can pay online or dispute your Penalty Order on our Pay or Dispute Your Penalty Order page on our website. Please note, municipal staff cannot make any adjustments to a Penalty Order. Requests for reduced fees, changes, or dismissal of Penalty Orders cannot be completed by our staff.

Background

In 2024, Council approved the ASE Program as part of Severn's broader commitment to traffic safety. Following this decision, staff determined the most effective locations for ASE deployment, focusing on school and community safety zones. These zones are identified within the Community Safety Zone By-law (By-law 2025-27).

Since approval of the ASE program, Severn has:

  • coordinated with provincial ministries, utility, and service providers to ensure compliance
  • identified and designated six Community Safety Zones as priority camera locations based on speed and safety data
  • installed the required 90-day advance notification signage to inform the public before the start of enforcement
  • installed cameras within the noticed areas

With the above items completed, the Township is now able to issue Penalty Orders.
