Severn celebrates Stay Active Stay Connected program launch with community open house

Township of Severn welcomed residents to the Washago Community Centre on September 21 for an open house celebrating Stay Active Stay Connected, a free recreation and social program for adults 55+.

Funded by the Government of Ontario through the Seniors Community Grant Program, the initiative supports healthy aging by making it easier for residents to take part in local activities and connect with their community.

The open house included a welcome and land acknowledgment by Mayor Mike Burkett, remarks from MPP Jill Dunlop's office, Simcoe North, and a presentation by Erica Avery, the Township’s Recreation Coordinator. Guests then enjoyed light refreshments and an opportunity to meet one another and speak with staff.

Stay Active Stay Connected combines structured activities, such as fitness, guest speakers, and workshops, with casual recreation and social time. Residents can explore the opportunities that interest them without a membership or long-term commitment.

The program also includes plans for a free lending library, offering recreation equipment and resources for use outside scheduled activities. Details about available items and borrowing will be shared as the program develops.

“We want residents to have a welcoming place where they can try an activity, meet a neighbour and feel connected to their community,” said Mayor Mike Burkett. “Stay Active Stay Connected gives adults 55 and older more opportunities to do just that, at no cost. We are grateful to the Government of Ontario for helping us bring this program to Severn.”

Residents are encouraged to share their interests and ideas with staff to help shape future programming.
