Members of Severn Council, MP Chambers, MPP Dunlop, and community representatives gathered at Marchmont Community Park

Severn, Ontario: Township of Severn has started construction on three new multi-use sports courts that will be located in Marchmont Community Park, Coldwater Fairgrounds, and Washago Centennial Park. Funding for this project was received from the Government of Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) Community, Culture and Recreation stream that funds key infrastructure projects to ensure thriving and healthy communities across Canada.

“I am thrilled for the communities of the Township of Severn with the addition of these three multi-use courts, which will allow people of all ages and abilities to participate in outdoor recreation activities with this enhancement. These courts will contribute to the health and well-being of individuals and families and continue to encourage outdoor activities now and in the future.”

—MPP Jill Dunlop, Simcoe North

Multiuse sports courts are versatile athletic surfaces that can be used for various sports and activities. They are designed to accommodate different sports such as basketball, pickleball, volleyball, tennis, soccer, and more.

“As our community grows, it is important that we increase the opportunities for residents of all ages to have appropriate facilities to get outside and live healthy lifestyles by being active. It is always great news when Simcoe North receives federal funds to support our community priorities.”

—MP Adam Chambers, Simcoe North

The work to be completed includes:

  • preparation of the sites at each of the three locations
  • establish hydro connections for each site
  • installation of the athletic surface
  • installation of netting and court accessories
  • placement and operation of lighting

The project has a total value of almost $711,000, with the funding representing close to $521,000 of the project costs.

“The addition of the multi-use sports courts in Marchmont, Coldwater, and Washago provides new spaces and opportunities for physical activity, social connection, and outdoor play in Severn. I want to thank both the Government of Canada and the Province for awarding Severn with this funding that has allowed us to enhance our recreation services. Council and staff are committed to delivering projects and programs like the multi-use courts that align with our Recreation Master Plan, and that support an active and healthy community."

—Mayor Mike Burkett, Township of Severn

Work began on this project in Washago in mid-September, with each location started shortly after with initial site grading and preparation currently underway. The courts are expected to be completed and ready for play in spring 2024.
